![]() I find the story and the character to be wildly funny and full of surprises. Diplomacy urges me to say I love them all but the truth is my favorite character is Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi. The disappointment of the story’s fans, however, led Collodi’s publishers to insist that he resurrect Pinocchio and continue the puppet’s adventures.By Michael Buckley I’m often asked what character in all of folklore is my favorite. Analysis and adaptationsĬollodi’s original serial, which was titled Le avventure di Pinocchio: storia di un burattino (“The Adventures of Pinocchio: The Story of a Puppet”), was meant to serve as a warning against bad behaviour, and it ended with Pinocchio’s fatal hanging. ![]() The Fairy then turns Pinocchio into a real boy. Pinocchio rescues his father and thereafter takes care of him. After further adventures, Pinocchio is swallowed by the Terrible Shark and finds Geppetto living in the shark’s belly. Twice he begins attending school, and twice he allows himself to be led astray, the second time resulting in his becoming a donkey. Eventually, Pinocchio finds the Fairy again and comes to live with her as her son. Later, Pinocchio again falls in with the Fox and the Cat, who trick him out of his gold pieces. When Pinocchio lies to the Fairy about the gold pieces, his nose grows comically long. However, the Fairy with Azure Hair saves Pinocchio at the last moment. Eventually, the Fox and the Cat, disguised as Assassins, hang Pinocchio in order to get the gold pieces. Going his own way, and ignoring all advice, Pinocchio soon falls in with a variety of bad characters, particularly the Fox and the Cat, who scheme to steal the five gold pieces Pinocchio was given for Geppetto. Pinocchio returns to Geppetto’s home alone, and when the Talking Cricket admonishes him, Pinocchio kills the cricket. Once its feet are made, Pinocchio runs away, and Geppetto is arrested when he seizes the puppet. ![]() He is given a piece of enchanted wood, and as soon as Geppetto carves the puppet, which he names Pinocchio, it begins abusing the old man. They can also be a useful lens for real-estate photography. Fisheye lenses are ‘made’ for photographing wraparound spaces like sports stadiums and town squares and the interiors of old buildings such as churches and new buildings such as factories and warehouses. Or the reverse – use it to look down from high vantage points. Lie on the ground and see how the ground planes out towards towering buildings or trees. Getting the camera low down, then pointing up can make the best of figures or objects against the sky. It may seem surprising, but a fisheye lens can focus quite close to an object, providing another way to isolate or highlight part of an image. ![]() For night landscape photography it can produce stunning images of the stars and milky way. Apply it to landscape or skyscapes: you can encapsulate a whole city centre in a single circular image. The original usage of a fish eye lens was to create large panoramic views at 180 degrees. They’ve become visual tropes and they fit within our expectations. | Credit: Hollie Mateerįisheye lenses can be used for any subject – the sky’s the limit, and it often is!Īs viewers today we’re used to seeing fisheye versions of some subjects and accept the distortions as part of the dynamic of the image. Standard wide-angle lenses take in a wide angle of view but try to record true horizontals and verticals and keep distortion to a minimum.ĭepending on the focal length, a wide-angle lens may have some ‘barrel distortion’ at the sides, but this is relatively small and can be reduced in post-processing.Ī fish eye lens makes a virtue of the problem of distortion by accepting the curvature in order to show a wider view of the world far beyond the range of normal sight.īecause of their ultra wide angle, fisheye lenses are ideal for capturing large architectural spaces. What’s the difference between a fisheye and a wide-angle lens? The objects they’re using in their tricks – such as stairs and rails – look bigger and more elongated, so the result is more impressive.Īnd what works for skateboarding works for many other sports as well – for example, snowboarding and surfing, the golfer driving off, divers and climbers, or basketball players jumping for the ball. Skateboarders appreciate the look a fisheye lens gives. On the practical side of things, a fish-eye lens is much less likely to lose track of the moving athlete as they ‘kick flip’ or ‘grind a ledge’ at high speed. The curved sides of the lens element give the image an encapsulated look – the athlete being in a world of their own that we are not a part of. The fisheye enhances the height above the ground showing the figure against the sky, and we see the full body shape without interference from confusing background elements. Photographers and filmmakers often use fisheye to capture the dynamic movement of skateboarding. However, there are a few examples of zoom fisheye lenses – we cover these and more in our list of best fisheye lenses later in this article. Many fisheye lenses are manual focus – but with such a wide angle view, and as you’ll often be shooting at narrower apertures, getting sharp manual focus with a fisheye isn’t too taxing.įisheye lenses are usually prime lenses, so there’s no zooming in or out – you have to do the moving to get into a good position. The field of view is reduced, though still extremely wide. Full-frame fisheye lens – projects the hemispherical image beyond the sensor producing a rectangular image of the scene, but one which uses the sensor’s full array of pixels.Circular fisheye lens – typically captures light from 180 degrees in all directions and projects a complete hemispherical image onto the camera sensor, producing a circular image on a black rectangle. It’s important to note that fisheye lenses come in two types: You’ll find underwater photographers, extreme sport photographers, astrophotographers, and even architectural photographers utilising these types of ultra-wide-angle lenses on their camera.Īs we explore further, there can be an abstract and artistic nature to image making with a fisheye. In the 1960s, fisheye lenses for 35mm cameras were introduced for general photography and were used for an increasingly wide range of specialist and creative uses. ![]() Named after how a fish would see – hence the name ‘fisheye’ – these new lenses were at first used for scientific purposes, studying cloud formations and weather. You need to completely hide the wires coming out of your television and soundbar from the TV to the outlet. It’s the best method to hide the irritating wires. You can hide the HDMI cable and wires behind the audio system. This is the most certain method to hide the extra power cords hanging out of soundbars and television. You can now tie that rolled cord with this nail. Hide the wiresĪn effective solution to hide the extra pieces of the cord is to roll it in the shape of the circle and then clamp this cord with tape or an adhesive, after rolling the cord drill a nail in the wall behind the hanging television. When you are mounting the soundbar above the television, keep that in your mind that the soundbar should be inverted in such a way that that the speaker fires the sound at the angle of 45 degrees under the horizontal line. After that, connect it with the HDMI cable. These plastic straps can secure the stand and you can enjoy music at high volumes. You can also make it secure with the plastic strap. Keeping in mind the esthetics of the living room, the mounting soundbar at the top of the television not looks smooth. It is not a good idea to mount the soundbar below the TV instead, you should fix it at the top of the television for a better sound experience. If your room has couches and sofas and your television is hanging high on the wall, it is best to fix the soundbar with tv but if you sit on the floor instead of sofas and your television is hanging near to the floor on the wall. It is just a matter of style and personal preference. You can place them above or below the television. So the position of the soundbar does not matters. You can assume them granting an audience a surrounding sound vision. It is just similar to the eyes of the toad. This tilting helps soundbars in generating a surround sound. The two speakers that are present at the ends of the soundbar should be tilted at a specific angle. The sound coming out of the soundbar must be in a straight direction. But mounting the soundbars is linked with the fact that on how much height your TV is hanging from the floor. Soundbars can be mounted on the top of your televisions. 1.8 When should you place the soundbar under a TV?.1.7 Different Issues with mounting soundbar.1.5 Why soundbar positioning is Important?. ![]() “Parents on the other hand basically trust the brand (trust the price points and locations will filter out the wrong kinds of people.)” “To teens, Starbucks remains a place where you can act (a bit) like a grown up and you can be a space with minimum adult supervision (especially if you can pass for white.)” said Simon. Starbuck also has a unique appeal to young people who can’t go to bars and want to have a place to hang out. Bryant Simon, history professor at Temple University and author of Everything But the Coffee: Learning About America from Starbucks told BuzzFeed News that ever-changing novelty drinks like custom Frappucinos appeal to teenagers because unlike adults who tend to stick to their same coffee order for decades, teens will experiment with new tastes and orders. Teens and young people have long been devoted fans of sweet icy drinks like the Frappuccino, and that’s exactly the TikTok demographic. The biggest contributor to the rise of the Appuccino is TikTok, where customized drink suggestions go viral and there are Starbucks influencers (and even employees) who show off the drinks they make. But the mobile app is only part of the rise of the custom drink - just the sweet cold foam topping on the drink. The app menu won’t let you add certain toppings meant for lattes or espresso drinks to the iced teas and Refreshers. It also mitigates the possible embarrassment of ordering a weird drink in person, and gives the budding alchemist the extra time needed to ponder which extra pumps to add. Adding in a Splenda or extra shot - pretty standard things you might order if you were standing in a store - is given the same visual weight as less common additions like pistachio syrup or kiwi chunks. The user interface of the customization menu also has a flattening effect that makes add-ons more acceptable. When you order through the app, adding in customizations is easy, almost encouraged. The number of store locations where the mobile app accounted for over 20% of orders during peak rush went from 4,600 to 7,200 over the course of a year. For some stores, mobile orders increased even more sharply. ![]() According to a recent earnings report from Starbucks, 26% of orders from January through March 2021 were placed over the mobile app, up from 18% of orders the year before. Last spring, as many stores closed down inside for weeks or months, the mobile app became crucial. Like any change in US consumer habits over the last year, the pandemic is a driving force. ![]() You can read there to learn about Cecil and Susan Hayward and their passion for finding and documenting these stone monuments. Frank Korvemaker, the respected Saskatchewan historian and co-author, was compelled to sell the publisher’s remaining stock himself and they are now all gone. It’s my understanding that the publisher ran into financial problems. It’s not meant to be a listing of all such structures but this book provides examples of the types of buildings to be found including a substantial background as to why they were built and who built them. This is the book that lists some of the most iconic of Saskatchewan’s stone buildings, be they homes, churches, schools or other structures. It’s a book called Legacy of Stone – Saskatchewan’s Stone Buildings. One such publication is quite well known among those who love stone buildings. I checked respected publications for identification and other information about this location but those publications were as silent as the stones of this house. These people were unaware of this particular house. However I’ve consulted with the the people who I consider to be the most knowledgeable about Saskatchewan’s stone buildings. To be clear, I’m not likely the first person to have photographed this Saskatchewan stone house. The location is among trees, behind other structures and away from the main roads, and this has concealed it to both the modern age and the digital lens. It was just such a place that I discovered in July 2022 and am pleased to show you today. For those who are driven to explore for prairie history there are few things as satisfying as the discovery of an old stone house, especially one that has rarely if ever been photographed. “One night in Boston, Rusty started a riot,” Tim relates. “Rusty Day was about an inch away from slicing Ozzy Osbourne’s neck.” Attempted Ozzycide was only the beginning for our man Rusty, however. “We did a few dates with Black Sabbath and we got into a big fight with them over a bag of pot,” Carmine fondly remembers. There were pot busts, nights in jail, and fistfights everywhere. But Cactus still made the Fudge look like amateurs in the rockpig sweepstakes. Tim was one of the original TV tossers and hotel room trashers, and Carmine was the guy with the mudshark and the groupie in the infamous Led Zep incident. Then things started to get crazy.īoth Tim and Carmine were already debauched road kings, hardened from their days with Vanilla Fudge. So we had to make it a little more presentable.”Įventually, the original cover was printed up as a sticker and plastered all over the US, and occasionally all over an otherwise naked whore of Babylon, as the band took their drug-fuelled act on the road. ![]() “But they banned it, because they said department stores wouldn’t rack it. “It was a real cactus, it was completely untouched,” Carmine assures. “Initially, the cactus only had two little bits on the bottom, so it looked like an erect penis with balls,” Tim explains. Their album cover, featuring an innocent cactus saluting the red sky, was banned from stores. The speed trials and two-ton pummel of Cactus was not the only edgy aspect of this surly new gang of four. They had this really fast song called I’m Going Home, so we said: ‘Let’s make ours even faster.’” “At the time, Parchment Farm was one of the fastest songs ever recorded. “It’s true, we did a lot of speed,” Carmine says, honestly. No wonder, then, that McCarty referred to the first Cactus record as their “Methedrine album”. They immediately got to work on their first, self-titled album, a remarkably fast ’n’ furious explosion of fuzz and proto-metal highlighted by a berserk, hell-for-leather cover of Parchment Farm. Guitar player Jim McCarty was recruited from the recently disbanded Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels, and wild-hearted singer Rusty Day was a refugee from Ted Nugent’s Amboy Dukes. The Cactus band was rounded out with a couple of Motor City madmen. Out of frustration, Bogert and Appice formed Cactus in 1969. “We had done well with the Fudge, so there was no reason to believe that we wouldn’t be successful again,” Carmine says.Īlthough Bogert and Appice would eventually play with Jeff Beck half a decade later, the supergroup idea was dashed when Beck got into a near-fatal motorcycle accident that left him incapacitated for over a year. With the Fudge quickly melting into a runny mess of clashing egos and dwindling popularity, the crafty rhythm section decided to break out on their own, scheming to put together an earth-shaking supergroup of heavy players that included guitar god Jeff Beck and Faces hips-wriggler Rod Stewart. “No, they cried because they thought: ‘Oh my god, your career is over.’” ![]() I guess that the hotel room girls did not cry because they were so overwhelmed by the album’s purple-mountain majesty. “Remember the three girls in the hotel room started to cry when they heard it?” Me and Tim looked at each other and said: ‘I don’t think so.’” And I’ll never forget the day we listened to it. “See, what happened with the Fudge was, we did this second album, this… thing called The Beat Goes On, which is actually a concept album that our producer, Shadow Morton, told us would be the most amazing thing since The Beatles. Unfortunately, I have been unable to consult this source myself, though I have no reason to doubt Dr. Campbell, Minister of the Riverside Church in New York City, who gave the relevant sermon in 1970 and published it as “Give Ye Them To Eat” in 1973. The generally dependable Quote Investigator, Garson O’Toole, traced a permutation of this aphorism to Ernest T. The aphorism most likely has an ecclesiastical origin (making its association with Twain all the more ironic). ![]() Russel Honore attributed it to his army chaplain, while Red Cross Chairwoman Bonnie McElveen-Hunter credited it to the prominent Presbyterian pastor turned “randy reverend,” Dr. It was also, conspicuously, cited by two celebrated faces of the Hurricane Katrina recovery. Sewell Perkins, Bob Proctor, Felicia Shaw, Dianne Wilson, David Wood, and Darlene Zschech. The corporate, pseudo-psychiatric, and evangelical “life coaches” the aphorism has been repeatedly attributed to include Don Boyer, Les Brown, Kyrbyjon Caldwell, Dave Martin, John C. Twain would’ve viewed this industry as representative, at best, of doltish naïveté and, more likely, as cynical charlatanism. It was invented and popularized by a cottage industry of self-help books and motivational speakers many decades after Twain’s death. The “two most important days” quotation clearly fails this test. As Louis Budd put is, Twain indulged a “lifelong suspicion that the mass of mankind is venal, doltish, feckless, and tyrannical, that the damn fools make up a majority anywhere.” The Occam’s Razor of Twain attribution is, as follows: If the aphorism in question indicates a sentimental, nostalgic, or otherwise optimistic attitude towards humanity, it probably didn’t come from Twain. Perhaps appropriately, in a year which has officially been deemed post-truth, the most frequently encountered example of Twain’s notorious wit is something he most certainly never said. It has been tweeted by over 900 separate accounts, reaching over 5.2 million users, in the past twelve days.* Antoine Fuqua made it the epitaph to his 2014 action film, The Equalizer, starring Denzel Washington, which grossed nearly $200 Million worldwide. ![]() ![]() In just the hour prior to this writing, the quote appeared in seven independent Facebook posts. This is currently the most viral piece of Twain apocrypha. The two most important days of your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why. The most common question addressed to the Center for Mark Twain Studies is some variety of “Did he really say that?” Whenever possible, we track down the original source, as well as attempt to trace how their words came to be imagined in Twain’s mouth. It has only increased with the popularization of digital media. The circulation of such apocryphal aphorisms was common enough in the 20th century. There is perhaps no greater testament to Twain’s lasting reputation than the habitual misattribution of miscellaneous wit and wisdom to his name. |
